In Memoriam: Adolfo Ich Chamán

James Rodríguez of MiMundo has put together this special multimedia entry commemorating the third anniversary of the murder of Adolfo Ich Chamán, Q’eqchi’ Mayan schoolteacher, recognised anti-mining leader, and land tenure activist from El Estor, Guatemala. Mr. Ich Chamán was brutally murdered on September 27, 2009, by Mynor Padilla, head of security for the Guatemalan Nickel Company (CGN), then-owned by HudBay Minerals, a Canadian mining company.

The above slideshow contains music played by Adolfo Ich himself. The Ich-Choc family provided the audio file to MiMundo.org.

You can read more MiMundo.org photo-essays related to the case here and you can read more on the case being brought against the mining company by Ich Chaman’s widow in Canada here.

More on this from James can be found here.
